Well, there's a cover that's coming right at you. I don't know the artist. I thought that little squiggle by the left stirrup might be a signature, but if it is, I can't make it out. Whoever painted it did a good job. .44 WESTERN MAGAZINE, like all the Popular Publications Western pulps, had good covers, good authors, and great story titles. Authors in this issue include Ed Earl Repp, Lee Floren, John G. Pearsol, Jay Karth, Le Roy Boyd, Jack Sterrett, and Eugene R. Dutcher. Maybe not an all-star lineup but probably worth reading.

If he wanted to tighten up on the reins, the cowboy would have to lean backwards at at least a 45 degree angle, probably throwing his aim off.
I recall John Wayne in a western doing this scene but using rifles instead of handguns. What movie?
True Grit, I believe.
In the John Wayne version, he has a Winchester in his right hand and a Colt in his left. In the Coen brothers remake, Jeff Bridges uses two revolvers.
James: You are correct. The "brand" is the signature of Albin Henning, an "AH".
It looks like he painted ALL the covers for .44 Western from 1937 - 1943.
It ended in 1943 only because of his passing away. I really, really like his art!!

Thanks, Sheila!
