Stan Lynde, R.I.P.

Most of you probably know what a huge fan I am of writer/artist Stan Lynde and his long-running comic strip RICK O'SHAY. I'm very sorry to report that Stan has passed away from cancer at the age of 81. His obituary in the Washington Post can be found here. I'm glad I got to know him and had a chance to tell him how much his work meant to me. Somewhere Hipshot Percussion is looking up at a snow-capped mountain and telling his ol' pard so long.

I always enjoyed Rick O'Shay, especially Hipshot's visit to "church" in the Sunday strip's.

Me too. The strip was in the L.A. Times a long time ago, but they dropped it when they started cutting back on the comic page from 2 to 1. It's not here, of course, maybe never has been. Comics artists don't seem to get a lot of respect.

Jerry,
Those strips were always my favorites. Our paper didn't carry the dailies, just the Sundays, so until I read the storylines reprinted in Stan's memoir I didn't know what good traditional Westerns they were. There's some fine hardboiled stuff in there, and some of the best use of light and shadow I've seen this side of Milton Caniff.

The June issue of Comics Review features a Rick O'Shay cover and continues prints an entire daily story from 1971. CR has been reprinting the strip for several years.

sorry to hear this.

A real loss. I loved Rick O'Shay and was sorely disappointed when the paper I was reading at the time dropped it. Ditto Latigo.

Wow I hadn't heard this.

I have the big Fantagraphics collections of LATIGO and they are a fave of mine. I thought it must've taken a good amount of nerve to do a long Christian storyline in a national strip, even back in the 70s!

Stan will be remembered well for a lot of accomplishments.

Adios, Mr. Lynde.
