I've been quite a fan of Hubert Rogers' pulp covers. Here's another very good one on this issue of ADVENTURE. There's a fine lineup of authors inside, too, including Walt Coburn, Gordon Young, William MacLeod Raine, Lawrence G. Blochman, Paul Annixter, and Ared White. That's a dramatic cover by William F. Soare on this issue of SHORT STORIES. I always like seeing that red sun. There's a strong line-up of authors in this issue: Harry Sinclair Drago, Gordon Young, Frank Richardson Pierce, Warren Hastings Miller, Jackson Gregory, Lawrence Treat, H.S.M Kemp, and Captain Frederick Moore. Probably well worth reading with yarn-spinners like that.
We'll start the year with a pith helmet alert and a fine cover by Hubert Rogers, an artist I've really come to appreciate in the past few years. This issue of ADVENTURE features stories by W.C. Tuttle, Gordon Young, and Tom Roan, all top-notch pulpsters, as well as H.H. Matteson, Andrew A. Caffrey, and Captain Jean M. Ellrich ("Sharkologist"! The cover says so). I hope all of you have a great, pulpish, adventurous year.
Here's another pith helmet cover, this one by Duncan McMillan. I like the colors on this one. This issue of ADVENTURE has some excellent writers in it, including Gordon MacCreagh with a Kingi Bwana story. Also on hand are W.C. Tuttle, Albert Richard Wetjen, Gordon Young (with a serial installment), and a couple of lesser-known writers, Andrew McCaffrey and James Stevens.
This is a cute cover by A.R. Tilburne, but I'm not sure how well it fits a magazine of two-fisted adventure yarns. However, there are some fine authors, including some of my favorites, in this issue of SHORT STORIES: Dan Cushman, Donald Barr Chidsey, James B. Hendryx (with a Halfaday Creek story), Jim Kjelgaard, Gordon Young, Paul Annixter, and Edward Parrish Ware. The famous "red sun" is barely visible on this one but still there.
Here we have another of those self-referential covers: an issue of ADVENTURE with a guy sitting in front of a fireplace reading . . . an issue of ADVENTURE. The art, which I think is pretty good, is by an artist I've never heard of: Hibberd V.B. Kline (the V.B. stands for Van Buren). Is the premise a little cute? Yeah, but I think it works okay here. Inside the issue, there's no question about the authors: W.C. Tuttle, Gordon Young, Talbot Mundy, Gordon MacCreagh, J. Allan Dunn, and S.B.H. Hurst. That's a really strong bunch of writers.
