Music I Like: The Letter - The Boxtops

I have a vivid memory of sitting in my bedroom in my parents' house on a rainy summer afternoon in 1967, reading comic books and listening to the radio. And I remember that this song was one that played that afternoon. (The radio station would have been KXOL, at 1360 on your AM dial, famous even then for being one of the first places where George Carlin worked.)

I remember James, I remember. Transistor radios...Panasonic was mine...under my pillow at night when I was supposed to be asleep. It was a big deal eh? - Jim

This song is a favorite, as are several of the other Boxtops tunes. When I play it with my band, I introduce it as the #1 song that fell between Ode to Billy Joe and Light My Fire. Quite a transition. And was Alex Chilton a noir singer or what?

I didn't realize this one fell between those other two songs as #1. What a run! The summer of '67 was a great one for music.
