This issue of STAR WESTERN sports a great cover by Emmett Watson, and look at that line-up of authors: Max Brand, Walt Coburn, E.B. Mann, Ray Nafziger, Cliff Farrell, Robert E. Mahaffey, Jay Lucas, and Malcolm Reiss. I don't own this issue. The scan and the information come from the Fictionmags Index. But I'm sure it's a great issue and I'd read it if I had a copy, you can bet a hat on that.
I don't know who did this cover, but dang, I like it! That hombre's gonna read 'em from the book, no doubt about it. There was a discussion about WALT COBURN'S WESTERN MAGAZINE earlier this week on the PulpMags email group, and that prompted me to take a look at the covers on that pulp and pick out one I like for this post. Seeing as how WALT COBURN'S WESTERN MAGAZINE was a reprint pulp, the editors had plenty of good stories to choose from. In this issue, we have a Walt Coburn novella, naturally, and also stories from Cliff Farrell, Ray Nafziger, Robert E. Mahaffey, Jay Lucas, and Lloyd Eric Reeve. That's a pretty good bunch of authors.
Boy, that's an Injury to a Hat cover just waiting to happen. The guy's really asking for it! Meanwhile, inside this issue of WESTERN STORY are yarns by Jackson Gregory, Peter Dawson, Cherry Wilson, Jay Lucas, Don Alviso, and Wes Fargo, a house-name that was sometimes E.B. Mann, sometimes Roy de S. Horn, and very likely other authors as well. I have no idea who was behind the name here. That's a striking cover, one of many on WESTERN STORY during this era.
