Hitting the Wall

Those of you who are writers, or who are acquainted with writers, are probably well aware of one thing we all have in common: we complain. We complain a lot. But even so . . . man, the pages came slow today. Really slow. But the good thing, to quote Scarlett O'Hara, is that tomorrow is another day.

It's gonna be a long night for me tonight. Deadline to meet for Wednesday and I have to use my time wisely and constructively.

Slow is bad enough but having to back track and even throw away...that's the heartbreaker for me. I try to fix things as I go along to make the final revision easier. But it never seems to work out that way. Where is this formula they're always bitching about?

I didn't have to throw anything away yesterday, but I agree that's the worst. Yesterday my problem was spending 'way too much time just staring at the computer trying to figure out what the hell to say next. (I realize that's, uh, sort of the definition of writing, but when it's going slow, I still don't have to like it.)

So here's a question: you are a professional writer with multiple deadlines. When I hit the wall or pages come slowly, no big deal. What happens when the pages come slowly for you? Do you have to double up on another day? Or is there enough wiggle room in the schedule for you to have slow days?

No, there's no wiggle room in my current schedule. I'll have to have some really good days somewhere along the line. History tells me that will happen, but I always worry about it.

And as Livia just said, "Some days it goes and some days it doesn't, and the sooner you learn to accept that, the better off you are." Words of wisdom.
