Yow! That's a ton of info. Thanks, Brian - and you, James, for posting it.

Now if somebody could figure out who wrote "Kingdom of Blue Corpses" (12/35), all the authors would be identified. I've read that one but have no idea who wrote it. I seem to remember reading at one time that Arthur Leo Zagat's name was associated with this series, so maybe that one is his.

Don't you love it when pulp friends take the time to do these things?

I think most pulp fans love any sort of pulp-related list. I know I do.

I recall that Kingdom of the Blue Corpses was credited to G.T. Fleming Roberts, and that Arthur Leo Zagat was said to have written only one X novel, December 1937's Plague of the Golden Death.

Pretty sure I got this info from that old Pulp Classic book on X from Bob Weinberg.
I'll see if I can find it and double check,

To each and all,

I've never read a Secret Agent X pulp. Any suggestions as to which issue to start with? Also, did any of the authors listed produce noticeably higher quality and more exciting work than the others?

Thanks,
B.Ritt

P.S. That cover for the first issue is fantastic! And as a bit of trivia, I'd swear the crazy-looking guy holding his head, directly to the right of the skull (from our point of view, not the skull's) is taken from a well-known photograph of Boris Karloff playing a religious fanatic in John Ford's THE LOST PATROL.

I forgot to mention that THE LOST PATROL's release date was February 16, 1934, which coincides nicely with the date of Secret Agent X's first issue.

John,
Thanks for the info about Zagat. I was hoping I hadn't imagined reading that he did one of the SAX novels.

Brian,
Fleming-Roberts is probably the slickest and "best" writer who did SAX novels, but I have a fondness for the Chadwick entries, which are usually a little more bizarre and creepy. But I've liked all the novels I've read from the series. And although I'd never noticed it before, I agree about the guy on the first cover looking like Karloff.

Yeah, check out this poster for The Lost Patrol, with Karloff holding his head.

Pulp Rack has a list of stories written by Emile C Tepperman and they list Tepperman as the writer of Devils of Darkness, not Talons of Terror.
