The official website of the Western Fictioneers has gone live this morning, including information on how to join the organization. You can check it out here.
It says that all you need to become a member is to sell a piece of western fiction. Does that mean I can get a vanity press to run off some copies, sell one from the trunk of my car, and claim to be a western writer? Seems like too loose a definition. Or are vanity press authors welcome? Just wondering.
We're working now on clarifying some issues like that, Cap'n. No, vanity press sales don't count for membership, nor do royalties earned for books self-published through Lulu, Kindle, etc. You have to have been paid by a third party, an actual publisher. This can include legitimate small presses that pay royalties, whether they pay advances or not. It's just that you don't have to sell a certain number of books or stories or earn a certain amount of dollars to qualify.
I mean a second party, not a third party, of course. A publisher who isn't you (or your wife or your dog). I've been out mowing, I'm punch-drunk on sweat and grass fumes.

"I'm punch-drunk on sweat and grass fumes."
I like the sound of that. Usually leads toward a beer at my house.
