Sunday Morning Bonus Pulp: Planet Stories, Summer 1941

That's kind of a busy cover on this issue of PLANET STORIES, but the art is by Virgil Finlay, so I'm not complaining. There's a really strong line-up of authors inside, too, including Leigh Brackett, Raymond Z. Gallun, Nelson S. Bond, Ross Rocklynne, Ray Cummings, Henry Hasse, and Frederic A. Kummer, Jr. PLANET STORIES was always fun.

That looks like a great issue. Planet Stories sometimes gets a bad rap for having (with the general exception of Brackett) a lot of poorly written, juvenile stories. While there may be a kernal of truth in that, Planet Stories is still one of the five to ten pulps I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island.

Planet Stories is one of my all time favorite pulps. And I love the logo from the early period.

There is so much great stuff to say about Planet Stories but I think the one I'll focus on was it was one of the few places for Sword & Sorcery style stories (dressed up in Space Opera). Poul Anderson wrote several as did Leigh Brackett and Henry Kuttner. Sword & Planet Stories it could have been called.

Count me in as another fan of Planet Stories! Something about the hot summers here in AZ make these kind of stories the perfect escape.
