Writing Update, 2/21

I seem to be stuck on 22 pages. That's how much I got written today, for the third day in a row. That's a pretty good pace. I'm also starting to be able to "see" the rest of the book in my head, which is always a good sign.

  1. Have you ever written a book on how to write a book?

  2. Have you ever considered that for most of us writing 22 pages of anything in a week is hard work, and you're complaining that you can't do better than that? You're in a slump? I don't think so.

  3. Oh, I know it's ridiculous for me to complain. The other day I caught myself thinking, "Boy, if this keeps up, I'll barely write a million words this year!" Luckily I can fall back on the excuse that most writers are a little crazy, so I'm just trying to uphold the tradition.

  4. I wouldn't even know how to start a book about writing. I discovered years ago when I tried to reach a creative writing class at the local junior college that I'm very much a "seat of the pants" writer. I just sit down and do what I do, and I couldn't explain how or why.

  5. It works well for you, "Seat of the pants" writing. Don't stop.

  6. It's more frantic worrying rather than complaining. He has to get 20+ pages 6 days a week to write all of the books he's got contracts for. He has trouble telling editors "No, I can't write that." So a slow month means it has to be made up later with even more pages. Nothing like 30+ pages a day vacations.
