I have a story in one of them. It was a lot of fun to write, which is why I am thinking about writing another.Adventuresfantastichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16907562789681407416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-9863607144279356562017-10-28T09:20:24.608-05:002017-10-28T09:20:24.608-05:00Downloaded this and will give it a Halloween read....Downloaded this and will give it a Halloween read.

I second that Hugh Cave was the best of the weird menace writers. I suspect that had as much to do with the genre's demise as any campaigns of censorship by politicians or others. And Keith, I also suspect most readers today would scoff at new Weird Menace yarns that stuck religiously (?) to the formula complete with Scooby Doo endings. Conversely, if you try to modify it -- to make it more appealing to intelligent moderns -- I know there are die-hard fans out there anxious for some reason to cry foul! All that said, it's time for a reminder that James' Rough Edges Press has recently published two excellent volumes of fresh Weird Menace tales.Chap O'Keefehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13408711495694216427noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-3906489486738072402017-10-27T09:53:50.660-05:002017-10-27T09:53:50.660-05:00I still have a soft spot for Weird Menace stories....I still have a soft spot for Weird Menace stories. Formulaic they may be, at their best they whip up a frenzy of melodrama and hyper-vivid atmosphere that's unparalleled.
Sometimes this just plain delights me.

From my own reading, I've found Hugh B. Cave to be the most consistent author of Weird Menace tales. His stories often hit all the genre highlights while providing a little extra, like an unexpected plot twist or particularly rousing finale(both pretty uncommon in Weird Menace yarns).

John HockingAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-65300474099366328672017-10-27T07:52:26.473-05:002017-10-27T07:52:26.473-05:00I need to read a few more. They're the most formulaic pulp genre, even more so than the Spicies, and that becomes more obvious the more of them you read. But at a rate of three or four a year, I really enjoy them.James Reasonerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18049917964433932612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-56158810429531830232017-10-27T07:01:04.789-05:002017-10-27T07:01:04.789-05:00I've read plenty of these bizarre stories when...I've read plenty of these bizarre stories when I used to collect the weird menace pulps. My friend Bob Jones wrote the best study of the genre, THE SHUDDER PULPS. They always seemed to me to be crazy comedies and many a time I laughed in disbelief. But I eventually burnt out and now rarely read one.Walker Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16089880902426182100noreply@blogger.com
