He worked very hard, loved his family even more than his work. As a child I always knew my grandfather was a writer, but my dad (his only son) never really gave us an insight as to what kind of books he wrote. As an adult, I am not starting my first Orrie Hitt book. I know how his story ends, and the legacy he left...but I want to see how his began. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06001138918413911880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-35184428030503939442009-08-31T11:19:25.649-05:002009-08-31T11:19:25.649-05:00Hi Michael,

I will have to try to find a copy of Hired Lover or Violent Desires, as the name "Fred Martin" was not among the pseudonyms on the paperwork Hitt's children had.Rittsterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08145597443811879849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-709705578326161132009-08-31T11:01:50.774-05:002009-08-31T11:01:50.774-05:00There is an "Orrie Hitt, Jr." on Faceboo...There is an "Orrie Hitt, Jr." on Facebook, born 1955...I asked him if he was the son the the great writer but got no response.Michael Hemmingsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17441800190702888919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-32427394321077929272009-08-31T11:00:38.335-05:002009-08-31T11:00:38.335-05:00Hitt seems to have also written under the pen name...Hitt seems to have also written under the pen name Fred Martin for an early Midwood called HIRED LOVER. I really appreciate it. I put a lot of effort into it and wanted to give Orrie credit where credit was due. I also wrote it because there's so little information available about Orrie and other writers in the "sleaze" genre (Clyde Allison and Ennis Willie come to mind, although Earl Kemp and Lynn Munroe have written some great stuff about Allison, and Stephen Mertz intervied Willie for an issue of Paperback Parade), and what information is available is often inaccurate. In fact, I agree with James and Frank Loose that Orrie's work (and Ennis Willie's) should be called "hardboiled sleaze" or just "hardboiled", rather than "sleaze". (Clyde Allison is a different case--his gift is humor and parody, and his books have fairly extensive scenes of softcore sex.) Thanks again to everyone for taking time to read about this "forgotten writer".

B.RittRittsternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-63456428654745886662009-05-30T22:08:05.544-05:002009-05-30T22:08:05.544-05:00Outstanding article. It was way out in the boonies back then. My father also died in a veteran's hospital at the age of 59, but in Arizona. Smoking killed him, too.Cap'n Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11783977137812876489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-60667364269243432862009-05-30T15:06:27.182-05:002009-05-30T15:06:27.182-05:00Simply fascinating, thanks, Brian and James!Simply fascinating, thanks, Brian and James!Jurihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03021010310386744591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-62851911544397615202009-05-30T09:36:20.115-05:002009-05-30T09:36:20.115-05:00It was my understanding that all of Hitt's novels ...It was my understanding that all of Hitt's novels were thinly-veiled allegories about the need for debt consolidation in post-war American society.

Another girl-hungry male.Periclesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7527967.post-10919068021706779932009-05-30T09:21:36.935-05:002009-05-30T09:21:36.935-05:00I deleted the spam comment just above, but I consi...I deleted the spam comment just above, but I considered leaving it up. It seemed appropriate somehow, since if any of Orrie's protagonists were around today, surely some of them would be involved in something sleazy like that.
