It's a big hiccup in an otherwise mostly terrific series. The beauty of Casca is you can pretty much pick any book in the first dozen and a half and jump right in. Choose whatever battle arena appeals to you historically and go for it. So much so that I couldn't finish it. Like you said, summarized action and meandering plot. I gave it up but since you say it gets better in the second half I'll give it another try.
