No, vanity press sales don't count for membership, nor do royalties earned for books self-published through Lulu, Kindle, etc. You have to have been paid by a third party, an actual publisher. This can include legitimate small presses that pay royalties, whether they pay advances or not. Does that mean I can get a vanity press to run off some copies, sell one from the trunk of my car, and claim to be a western writer? Seems like too loose a definition.
