Flight to Darkness (Original Gold Medal Cover)

I decided to look up the original cover of FLIGHT TO DARKNESS from its 1952 Gold Medal edition (the only edition until the New Pulp Press reprint). The art on this one is by Barye Phillips and is okay, but I don't think it's one of his better covers. My favorite Phillips covers are probably on some of the Shell Scott novels, although I'm far from an expert on his work.

I think Phillips did Murder Ride The Bus by Lionel White, one of my favorite old GMs. I liked a lot of his work. He was excellent with people, posing them naturally. And he was also a fine designer. His layouts were among the best of all the pb guys,

Overall, I still prefer the original GM covers to what has been used on most subsequent reissues. That said, Hard Case Crime have come up with some great covers for their reprints of old paperbacks. (BTW, James, I've been trying to send you as an email attachment a cover image I think you might like, but it keeps coming back as undeliverable!)

Keith,

If you're sending that cover scan to jamesreasoner at flash dot net, it ought to come through all right, but you can also try james53 at flash dot net and see if that address works better.
